LSPs & The BAFTAs: The Rise of Foreign Cinema

Written by Kennedy Adamu | February 13, 2023

The BAFTAs, one of the most prestigious awards in the film industry, has recently announced the nominations for its 2023 ceremony. One film, in particular, has made history. "All Quiet on the Western Front" has become the most nominated foreign language film ever, with an impressive 12 nominations. This is a testament to the film's powerful storytelling and outstanding performances.

This seems to be the culmination of the popularity of foreign films, with such successes as Bong Joon-ho's 2019 Best Picture winner "Parasite". Which not only took the Oscar that year but became the first foreign language film to win the prestigious award. And on the TV front - unless you've been living under a rock, the Spanish Heist Thriller "La Casa Del Papel (Money Heist)" and Korean drama "Squid Game" has been the biggest shows of the last ten years.

However, behind the scenes of all these international success stories is the role of Language Service Providers (LSPs) in bringing film and TV to audiences worldwide. The process of localisation, which involves adapting a film for specific cultures, languages and regions, is a crucial step in distributing foreign language films.

LSPs play a vital role in this process, providing services such as subtitling, dubbing, and voice-over to ensure that the film can be understood and appreciated by audiences in different countries. Without the work of LSPs, foreign language films would struggle to reach the same level of success, as they would be limited to only those who speak the original language. In the case of "All Quiet on the Western Front," LSPs have enabled the film to be nominated for and potentially win multiple awards and be enjoyed by audiences around the world.

It's important to note that localisation goes beyond just language. It also involves cultural adaptation, a complex process that requires a deep understanding of different cultures and customs. For example, in the case of "All Quiet on the Western Front," the LSPs might have had to consider the fact that the film is set in Germany and the Great War and make sure that the references and cultural context are accurate for the target audience.

The BAFTAs nominations for "All Quiet on the Western Front" showcase the significance of foreign language films in the film industry and the role that LSPs play in bringing these films to a global audience. The importance of LSPs in the localisation process cannot be understated, as it enables films to be understood, appreciated and enjoyed by audiences worldwide. Hopefully, it's not a quiet night for "All Quiet on the Western Front".
