The internet has transformed into an indispensable tool for education, entertainment, and global connectivity, benefiting a staggering number of over 5.1 billion individuals worldwide. However, for a significant portion of international citizens, a language barrier impedes their full participation in the online space. 

Recent studies, such as the one published by Rest of World in May 2023, highlight the overwhelming dominance of the English language on the internet, with it being used in more than 55% of online domains.

This statistic reveals that the representation of English on the internet is over 10 times higher than the 4.7% of the global population that speaks it as their primary language. While English exhibits the most striking overrepresentation, other languages, including Japanese, French, and German, also observe disproportionate usage compared to the number of native speakers. 

In contrast, languages like Mandarin and Min, spoken by a substantial 16.4% of the global population as their primary languages, are utilized on a mere 1.4% of web domains.

Experts from UNESCO express concerns about the future linguistic landscape, fearing that within 15 years, only a small number of languages will be prominently spoken in business and online settings, potentially dwindling to as few as five or 10 languages.

The inception of the internet dates back to 1989 when Tim Berners-Lee, a computer scientist from London, pioneered its creation. It was later introduced to the public domain in 1993. Not surprisingly, English dominated the early stages of the internet, accounting for approximately 80% of online content in the mid-1990s. 

Although there have been some modest shifts since then, the United Nations' initiative to achieve universal internet access globally by 2030 holds the potential to accelerate the pace of change.
